The story from Mostar

In the heart of Mostar lived a happy family, my neighbours, who filled our neighbourhood with love. One tragic day, they were brutally executed by Serbian troops at ‘Uborak,’ the nearby landfill, on 13 June 1992. The married couple left behind two orphaned children, weeping for their loss. This tragedy was not an isolated incident; it was part of a larger wave of violence in which a total of 114 innocent people from Mostar were killed in ‘Uborak’ and ‘Sutina. As a neighbour, I felt not only the personal grief, but also the deep shock of this large-scale tragedy, marked as the first major war crime of the war. Despite the darkness, our community, scarred by these loss-making events, tried to offer support to the orphans and keep the memory of the victims alive. More than 30 years later, justice remains an unfulfilled promise for the victims. The wounds of the past have not healed, and the search for answers continues. Mostar still carries the burden of these unresolved crimes, a reminder of the need for peace and justice that continues to bind our community together.
