The story from Sarajevo

It is the early 1990s. For years we had no electricity, gas, water, food or medicine to survive. Sarajevo is surrounded by the Serbian army, except for the mountain ‘Igman’ which is behind the airport. Here help is ready, but we had to get there first. I remember the risky ‘crossing’ over the runway, where barbed wire, UN soldiers in armoured vehicles, and Serbian troops blocked the way. Several men I know did not survive this crossing. They were shot, or taken away and tortured. ‘If we can't go over the airstrip, we'll go under it,’ was our motto that led to the creation of the Tunel Spasa (the Tunnel of Sarajevo)In 1993, for four months, the Bosnian army dug this tunnel under the airport. The entrance to this tunnel was hidden in the Dobrinja district, and the exit was in the basement of the Kolar family's house. During the occupation, the existence of the tunnel remained secret, as it was a military object. It served not only to transport weapons and ammunition, but also provided a way for food and medicine. Today, the tunnel is open to visitors as a museum.
