The story from Prijedor
In war-torn Prijedor, I ended up in the infamous ‘Omarska’ concentration camp, where I was obliged to wear the ‘bijele trake,’ or white bands, as identification for the Muslims. Although meant as a sign of obedience, I considered the ‘bijele trake’ a form of resistance. In this concentration camp, where atrocities took place, prisoners were mistreated and even murdered. Between these terrible events, I shared sorrowful stories with fellow prisoners. Together, we tried to find hope and bear each other's burdens in the most difficult moments. With great perseverance, I managed to escape the camp by digging a tunnel. The white band, once a symbol of oppression, now reminds me of my strength during these unpredictable ordeals.
